Cars that memories were made from...
They rumble and roar and if you’re past middle age, those sounds probably toss you back to a time in your life when things were just a little easier; or at the very least, your priorities weren’t so complicated. I’m talking ‘boys and their toys’ here but I’m sure the ladies have a few memories connected to those classic old cars from the past, as well.
The Delta area is home to more than one car club and you’ll find a great source for your next auto project with a visit to Orval’s Classic Cars, located right downtown. You can check out a fine assortment of local vehicles at some of the local car shows held right here in Delta.

Hot Rods
The hot rod is a staple of American classic cars but with these cars it’s all about speed. We’re talking about fast acceleration and high speed on the road. Roadsters were the cars of choice because they were light, easy to modify, and inexpensive. Seems the term has become commonplace these days though, as younger folks use it to refer to any car that’s been "hopped up" by modifying the engine. |
Muscle cars
Muscle cars are a key part of American culture in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. These cars have exactly what the name implies, they’ve got MUSCLE… the two essential ingredients being a lightweight body and a powerful V8 engine. Opinions vary among people who are passionate about these cars but while the fellas debate the technicalities, most ladies are just remembering that first date when he pulled up in front of the house.

Classic Cars
These cars are built to be shown off. You’ll know these cool cars when you see one. They’re definitely OLD…but the true definition varies. Suffice it to say they are older cars with enough historical interest and value to be collectible and worth preserving or restoring rather than scrapping. Some guys think that every car they’ve ever owned it a ‘classic’.

Antiques
Antique cars is a common term for older classic cars that were manufactured before 1940. You may or may not be a stickler for exact definitions, and in some cases they overlap. It really doesn't matter to many of us, but technically, according to the Antique Automobile Club of America an antique car is a vehicle that is at least 45 years of age. It’s a good thing we’re talking cars here, otherwise I’d prefer the word “classic”, myself.

Rat Rods
For those who aren't familiar with the term, a rat rod is a hot rod that’s not a perfectly glistening, fully completed show car. It’s a customized vehicle that’s a work in progress, or maybe it’s just intentionally unfinished to give it some grit and character. Usually inspired by the hot rods of the 1940s through the 1960s, a rat rod is built to be driven, not admired but it’s best to compliment the owner, just in case. |
All these definitions and details tend to get lost in the shuffle — romanticized away… when you’re strolling through the grass, enjoying the variety, talking gearboxes and carburetors and reliving all those backseat memories.
